Visit to UEL

In Brazil, people usually don’t visit Points of Interest in their own town; museums, theaters, forest parks, etc. For some spots, it is more common to see visitors from outside the city than locals. Since these places are always available, people just keep postponing going there indefinitely.

Having this in mind, I decided to explore the campus of UEL (State University of Londrina) on Sunday. And wow, it’s such a nice place for a walk! There were children riding bikes, families having picnics, and people walking their dogs.

The campus has a lot of nature and is really well kept. I saw capuchin monkeys, tizius, a yellow-headed woodpecker, Picazuro pigeons, and burrowing owls.

burrowing owls

The university was founded in 1970, and you can see buildings with very different decades and styles:

replica of Londrina first cathedral
  • The replica of Londrina first cathedral from 1934

  • red-brick building from around 1975

Concentre Building for some institute of the university
  • concrete building 2000
a building still under construction for research and development in technology
Not really my cup of tea, but it does transmit the idea of progress and technology
  • And a building still under construction for research and development in technology. The contractor is the same one that builds high/middle-income residential buildings.

Random finds

The campus was larger than I thought (And fortunately still growing).

I found some cool things along the way:

gandhi statue
  • A statue of Gandhi. He was probably a good guy, but this felt kind of really random.
  • A green dome, apparently part of the Museum of Science and Technology (I didn’t even know this existed, it’s so secluded from the rest).
goat farm
  • A goat farm.

  • The Center for Japanese Studies, which has a small Japanese garden inside. Thanks Okinawa for funding it.

If you search a little, there always something cool in your city
